# Use Follow Discord

> Install the vAudioLink Discord app, bind a voice channel, link accounts, and follow that room from OBS.

Follow Discord lets a Discord voice channel select the vAudioLink room used by an OBS dock. Discord remains the place for presence and talkback; vAudioLink carries the production audio.

<Warning>
  The public Discord bot setup currently creates **ASMR Collab** bindings. Although the Music Collab dock contains a Follow Discord mode, Music Collab bindings are not available through the public slash-command setup yet. Scene Share does not support Follow Discord.
</Warning>

## How the pieces fit together

| Part                   | Purpose                                                             |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| vAudioLink Discord app | Watches normal voice-channel membership and manages room bindings |
| Bound voice channel | Tells vAudioLink which Discord presence should activate a room |
| Linked host account | Connects the sponsoring Discord user to an eligible vAudioLink plan |
| ASMR Collab dock | Receives the room assignment and sends or receives production audio |
| Discord voice audio | Optional talkback; it is not the high-quality ASMR media path |

The bot does not connect to voice, hear audio, or speak. It observes voice presence and can post a join button in a text channel. vAudioLink production audio travels directly between the OBS docks and the vAudioLink relay.

## Before you start

* The server owner or a member with **Manage Server** can add the app.
* The person sponsoring the room has an eligible vAudioLink plan and links the same Discord account in the panel.
* Everyone using automatic Follow Discord has the latest **vAudioLink ASMR** dock installed.
* Use a regular voice channel with no more than two human participants. Bots and the server AFK channel are ignored.
* Decide whether you want one fixed studio channel or want the bot to follow a designated creator between channels.

## 1. Add vAudioLink to your Discord server

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the official install page">
    A server owner or member with **Manage Server** should open the following link:

    <Card title="Add vAudioLink to Discord" icon="discord" href="https://discord.com/oauth2/authorize?client_id=1517888192462848181&permissions=3072&integration_type=0&scope=bot%20applications.commands">
      Install the verified vAudioLink application and its slash command.
    </Card>

    Confirm that the application is named **vAudioLink** and its description is **vAudioLink Room Management Bot** before continuing.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the server">
    Select the Discord server, review the requested permissions, then select **Authorize**.

    The bot requests **View Channels** and **Send Messages**. It does not request **Connect**, **Speak**, or access to message content.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Verify the integration">
    In Discord, open **Server Settings → Integrations → Bots and Apps** and confirm **vAudioLink** appears. It should also appear in the server member list.

    If the app is missing, repeat the install while signed in to the correct Discord account and confirm you have **Manage Server**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review command access">
    The `/vaudiolink` command defaults to members with **Manage Channels**. That is the safest setup: an administrator posts the guest join button, while guests only select it.

    If you deliberately want another role to run `/vaudiolink join` or `/vaudiolink usage`, manage the command under **Server Settings → Integrations → vAudioLink**. The bot still enforces **Manage Channels** for binding commands and **Manage Server** for `setowner`.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Discord's own references explain [adding apps to a server](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/21334461140375-Using-Apps-on-Discord) and [application-command permissions](https://docs.discord.com/developers/interactions/application-commands).

## 2. Configure the Discord voice-room behavior

Choose one of the following patterns. Do not configure both unless you intentionally want to replace the previous behavior.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Follow one creator">
    Use this when the collaboration room should follow a designated creator into whichever normal voice channel they join.

    1. A member with **Manage Server** runs:

       ```text theme={null}
       /vaudiolink setowner owner:@Creator
       ```

    2. The selected creator joins the voice channel they want to use.

    3. Run `/vaudiolink status channel:#channel-name` to confirm the active channel is enabled.

    The selected creator must link that Discord account to a vAudioLink account with an eligible plan. Moving channels moves the binding. Leaving voice or moving to the AFK channel clears it.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Use one fixed channel">
    Use this for a permanent two-person studio or recording room.

    1. Create or choose a normal Discord voice channel.

    2. A member with **Manage Channels** runs:

       ```text theme={null}
       /vaudiolink bind channel:#studio
       ```

    3. Run `/vaudiolink status channel:#studio`.

    With automatic sponsor selection, exactly one eligible linked subscriber must be present in the channel. If several eligible subscribers may be present, the subscriber can bind the room to themselves:

    ```text theme={null}
    /vaudiolink bind channel:#studio sponsor:@Yourself
    ```

    The bot intentionally prevents one user from selecting somebody else as the fixed-channel sponsor. Use the **Follow one creator** setup if an administrator needs to designate another person.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

<Note>
  A room binding supports two human participants by default. A third human in the voice channel prevents the collaboration assignment. Move spectators to another voice channel.
</Note>

## 3. Link the host's Discord account

The sponsoring host must link Discord before the dock can identify them. A guest who joins through the bot's guest-key button can remain accountless.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the vAudioLink profile">
    Sign in at [panel.vaudiolink.eu](https://panel.vaudiolink.eu), open **Profile**, then select the **Account** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start the Discord connection">
    Under **Discord connection**, select **Link Discord**. In Discord, approve the connection for the same account that will join the voice channel.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sync the link">
    Return to **Profile → Account**. Select **Sync** if the card does not update automatically.

    **Expected result:** the card says **Discord linked**. If it still says **Discord not linked**, make sure the Discord account appears in the embedded account settings and select **Sync** again.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm sponsorship">
    In Discord, run:

    ```text theme={null}
    /vaudiolink usage
    ```

    The response is private. It should show the linked plan and remaining hosted hours. If the bot cannot find the account, repeat the link and sync steps.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## 4. Start Follow Discord in OBS

<Steps>
  <Step title="Join the configured voice channel">
    The linked sponsor and collaborator join the bound Discord voice channel. Keep the room to two human participants.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open and authorize the ASMR dock">
    In OBS, select **Docks → vAudioLink OBS ASMR Panel**, then **Host a session**. Finish the browser authorization.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select Follow Discord">
    On **Choose room mode**, select **Follow Discord**, then **Next**.

    <Frame caption="Follow Discord is selected from the ASMR Collab room-mode step.">
      <img src="https://mintcdn.com/v-audiolink/S72bY1qPEoK5CCTL/images/screenshots/asmr/room-mode.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=S72bY1qPEoK5CCTL&q=85&s=8b6b33f47ea8e9642ba4c1ef0ad3c910" alt="ASMR Collab dock showing Direct OBS Room and Follow Discord room modes" width="1107" height="600" data-path="images/screenshots/asmr/room-mode.png" />
    </Frame>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for the channel match">
    The dock connects to the vAudioLink control plane and looks for the Discord voice channel containing the linked account.

    **Expected result:** the dock identifies the expected server and channel and reports that the Follow Discord room is ready. If it says the feature is off, the account or community does not have `discord_rooms` enabled.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Explicitly enable sending">
    Enable the dock's send opt-in or start-session control only after verifying the matched channel. Merely joining Discord never starts production-audio transmission.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Verify the OBS source and routing">
    Confirm the vAudioLink incoming source is present in the intended scene and its meter responds. Keep it on **Monitor Off** unless you built an isolated monitor bus.

    Decide whether Discord is talkback-only. If OBS captures both Discord audio and the vAudioLink incoming source, the audience can hear a doubled or delayed voice.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## 5. Bring in an accountless guest

The host or administrator can post a reusable button for the currently active voice session:

```text theme={null}
/vaudiolink invite channel:#studio
```

The guest then:

1. Joins that Discord voice channel.
2. Selects **Join vAudioLink session** in the text channel.
3. Receives a private response containing **Open in OBS** and a guest key.
4. Opens the handoff on the computer running OBS.
5. If the browser handoff is blocked, opens the ASMR dock, selects **Join as a guest**, and pastes the key manually.

The join button does not reveal the guest key publicly. The bot checks that the person using it is currently in the bound voice channel.

An authorized member can alternatively run:

```text theme={null}
/vaudiolink join channel:#studio
```

## Leaving and moving channels

* In owner-follow mode, moving the designated creator moves the active binding.
* Leaving voice or moving to the server AFK channel clears the owner-follow binding.
* In fixed-channel mode, `/vaudiolink unbind channel:#studio` removes the binding.
* A new room assignment never bypasses the dock's explicit send opt-in.
